I don’t know why I feel called upon to get to my feet tonight!
But I have a few things I’d like to say, and I think the time’s about right I won’t complain about the mosquitoes that keep buzzing in my ears ~the woodchucks, squirrels and chipmunks l’ve coped with all these years I ~didn’t even mind the porcupine I saw sitting in my tree!
Or the raccoons that knock over my garbage for everyone to see!
No, those things don’t really bother me I can take them in my stride It’s all the wonderful things about Prouts that fill me with such pride When I first came here years ago, I didn’t know a soul!
And frankly I couldn’t have felt stranger if l’d landed at the Pole Everyone here was from Boston, New York or good old Philly!
And the thought of admitting to the “Show me” State made me feel well, downright silly! When I died say I came from St. Louis, everyone looked askance!
They couldn’t have been more dumfounded if ‘d said I hailed from Gdansk Then one cold and foggy night I was here, don’t remember the occasion And l’d elected to wear my silver fox cape, boy,did that cause a sensation Ir!
une of our prominent matrons took one look at me and said,!
young lady you Can’t wear that at Proutsy and i hoped l’d fall down dead!
But everyone else was very kind and ] tried to do my best, and not dress or act Like a yokel from way out in the middle west!
One nice girl asked me to join a tennis game one day!
And I was so embarrassed to have to tell her I didn’t know how to play But when Newell came all was forgiven, he played a darn good game Which made up for my shortcomings and saved the Augur name!
And now after almost fifty years, I have nothing but thanks and praise for all of our happy summers and wonderful fun filled days!
I wouldn’t take a million for the friends that l’ve made here!
And I look forward with such pleasure to seeing them each year!
I love every inch of this place, my memories would fill a tome!
Of this beautiful, glorious State of Maine and of Prouts my second home I just hope when I get to the pearly gates, I’II be able to look and see A lovely, long, white, heart shaped beach, and a porcupine in a tree.
