James M. Farr was a First Lieutenant and chaplain in the 3rd Pennsylvania Field Artillery starting in 1911, and was later part of the foreign service 92nd Division, serving in France during World War I.

The 3 girls in matching dresses are, in order of age: Frances Swasey Porteous (Mrs. Marion L.L. Short 1913-1939), Polly Porteous (Mrs. Andrew Y. Rogers 1916-1982), and Jane Porteous (Mrs. Richard Kinsherf 1918-1997). They are the daughters of John B. Porteous and Edith Frances Libby. Polly is the mother of Polly Larned, Tony Rogers, Mac Rogers, and Franny Zilkha.
