With the retirement of Hartley Merrick in 1945 and the appointment of the eider Belshaw as priest-in-charge for the first of his 18 summers, there ended the High Church era at St. James. It was replaced by a warm ecu- menical approach which reflected Canon Belshaw’s genial personality
and broad tolerance for the religious views of others. With this change of feeling was reborn the vision of a St. James Church designed to serve the whole community, along the lines originally proposed by Charles S. Homer, Sr. when he made his call for a “Union Chapel:’
